An Ithaca Carshare bill by New York Senator Lea Webb (NY-52) and Assemblymember Anna Kelles (AD-152) is now in effect as of last Thursday. The law clears a path for Ithaca Carshare to reopen in the Ithaca area.

The bill signed into law by Governor Hochul now allows nonprofit organizations, like Ithaca Carshare, to be able to obtain auto insurance from a nonprofit Risk Retention Group, as allowed by federal law. This will now solve a long auto insurance market issue for nonprofit organizations.

“I am thrilled that the law is now in effect, ensuring Ithaca Carshare can access the insurance they need through a risk retention group to relaunch operations. I heard from hundreds of constituents over the last year about how important carshare is to them and how they relied on it for their transportation needs, so it is exciting to have this vital transportation option returning to our community.” Assemblymember Anna Kelles said in a press release.

Ithaca Carshare was founded in 2006 and officially launched in 2008 with six vehicles. The nonprofit now has about 30 vehicles and has 1,500 members who are provided with 24/7 access for their transportation needs.

The organization plans to reopen sometime this month after pausing operations back in May due to the auto insurance issue. More information on their organization may be found on their website.
