A unanimous vote last night (September 25) by the Ithaca Common Council approved Dennis Nayor as the city’s permanent Chief of Police.
Nayor was appointed acting chief back in May 2019 by Mayor Svante Myrick, following the retirement of long-time chief Pete Tyler.
He joined Ithaca Police as a deputy chief about a year ago, after working more than 20 years as an officer for the City of Oneonta. Nearly five of those years were served as Oneonta’s police chief.
Meanwhile, Mayor Myrick is seeking applicants for an expected interim vacancy on the city court bench at the end of this year.
City Judge Scott Miller is like to depart, as he’s currently a candidate on November’s ballot for Tompkins County Court Judge.
The mayor says he won’t make an appointment until after the November election.
