Ithaca Police are warning the community about a new phone scam similar to another that recently conned a Tompkins County resident out of $20k.
That report came last week by a victim who was duped by someone “spoofing” the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department phone number to make it appear on the victim’s caller ID.
Now, more complaints are coming in from all over the country which claim the Ithaca Police department number is also being stolen.
The latest scheme involves callers who claim to need bail money for a family member in custody, sometimes even posing themselves as that family member.
Police remind the public that they would never ask for money or payment over the phone.
Anyone who runs into something similar should hang up the phone and notify local authorities.
