Cortland City Police are warning about the arrival of a global scam known as “brushing” to the area, involving multiple reports of unsolicited packages found in the mailboxes of residents.
Unfortunately, the items – which include things like seeds, face masks and jewelry – are not free gifts.
Federal trade officials say many are shipped from a certain district in Shanghai, China, adding the sellers obtain personal information from victims online and send these items to post fake consumer reviews under their name.
This scheme is reportedly an effort to boost sales and not expected to steal money or an identity.
However, it’s recommended that anyone who receives such a package change all of their e-commerce passwords.
