Indivisible Cortland County Plans “Good Trouble” Rally This Thursday
Another rally is set for this Thursday, July 17th from 6 to 7:30pm in front of Courthouse Park on Church Street in the City of Cortland. The rally is organized by Indivisible Cortland County (ICC), who say it is part of a national day of honor of John Lewis, who was a US Congressman and civil rights leader. Lewis died on July 17th, 2020.
The theme for this rally is “Good Trouble Lives On” and will honor Lewis’s commitment to non-violent protest, ICC says. John Lewis is known for being at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the Selma Alabama demonstration on March 7th, 1965, for voting rights. The rally would later be known as “Bloody Sunday.”
“Now more than ever, it is incumbent upon people to stand up for what is right instead of being silently complicit.” Said ICC Steering Committee Member, Brenda Nobles.
ICC says the rally is urging those in Cortland to never stop raising awareness of the “many injustices” that are being allegedly done by the current administration. ICC says injustices are happening with illegal detainment of migrants, an assault on Medicaid and social programs, and other human rights.
