Hundreds Attend ‘Hands Off’ Rally in Downtown Cortland
Rain didn’t stop hundreds from turning out in Downtown Cortland for the ‘Hands Off’ rally this past Saturday (April 5th). The protest was part of a nationwide movement protesting President Trump and Elon Musk’s recent actions. Neighboring Tompkins County’s rally reportedly had over 1,000 people attend at the Ithaca Commons.
In Cortland, an estimated 400 people came out to protest, with many carrying and waving signs against defunding longtime US programs, including Social Security, Medicaid, Health and Humane Services, Education Department and VA.
U.S. Congressman John Mannion (NY-22), who is currently serving in the 119th Congress as the Representative, joined protesters. Mannion even grabbed a bullhorn from folk singer Colleen Katteau and led some chants.
“We’re not going to be an Oligarchy. We’re not going to be an Autocracy,” Mannion said. “We’re going to stay a Democracy because it’s the power of the people that are going to win this.”
“The turnout is incredible,” said Cortland protestor Linda Smith. “I think people are starting to pay attention and realize the country’s in trouble and we need to fight back.
The protest was peaceful even as a few counter protesters were seen showing support for Trump and his administration. Participants said it was by far the largest protest they’ve seen at the intersection of Main Street and Port Watson Street.
