Local animal control officers are seeking information from the public after two puppies were found dead inside a crate that was left along a road in neighboring Cayuga County.
Humane Office Lindsey Andersen with the Country Acres Animal Shelter in Homer says the puppies, believed to be shepherd mixes between 12 and 15 weeks old were found around 2 p.m. Tuesday along Dresserville Road in the town of Sempronius.
Andersen says there’s evidence that the severely malnourished dogs were still alive when they were placed in the pet crate. It’s unclear how long the dogs sat alongside the road before authorities were alerted.
The dogs were taken to Cornell University in Ithaca for necropsies. Evidence suggest the dogs may have had parvo a serious but treatable condition.
A reward is being offered to anyone who can provide information in the case.
