HPV Film To Be Shown At Cortland Jr-Sr High Tonight

Local News

“We wanted to increase the awareness for the importance of the HPV vaccine, that it really is a cancer prevention for young people.”

Courtney McCallen-Kim, Cortland County Public Health Educator

The public is invited to a free movie tonight at the Cortland Junior-Senior High School.

The County Health Department presents “Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic.”

“We really want to encourage parents to come and view the film. They’re more than welcome to bring their teenagers and their kids as well,” said Courtney McCallen-Kim, a public health educator with Cortland County.

She cautions that kids under age 12 may find some of the stories of people with cervical and other HPV-related cancers a little intense.

McCallen-Kim likens the HPV vaccine to the vaccine against polio.

“My generation will have never known what polio does and the impact of polio because of the vaccine, and that’s what we’re hoping for with cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers.”

The Health Department booked the film after reviewing statistics showing only one in six young girls and boys in our county have been vaccinated.

See it tonight at 6, free, at the Cortland Junior-Senior High School.
