Matt Brooks: [00:00:00] Good morning. I’m Matt Brooks on X 1 0 1 a. Always classic in for another edition to meet Cortland County. And with me in the studio this morning. Coach Naz, part of the Homer Winter Fest Committee. Good morning, coach. How’s it going?

Coach Naz: It’s going great today. It’s feeling like winters, so hopefully it stays like this next week.

Matt Brooks: Less than a week, we got the Homer Winter Fest, January 23rd through the 25th throughout the Village of Homer. Coach, can you tell me, what’s coming up this year for Winter Fest?

Coach Naz: How much time do you have? This year we start on Friday with the ice sculptures being, put out throughout the town.

Winterfest ice cream events in the snowflake, prize wheel night, dusty and.show at the library. The Homer Elks, again is gonna do the fish fry buffet on Friday night, which is one that I always try to attend. The important things on Friday night, sponsored by X 1 0 1 and by Dan McNeil are the bonfire and the fireworks, like fireworks in the winter.

They have a little different feel and it’s, it’s nice to see those community art challenge grand opening will be at the Center for the Arts. Can’t thank the Center for the Arts enough for everything [00:01:00] they do for this event. And at the American Legion In the bar will be DJ Philly, who’s he’s Philly C is a great guy and a great community supporter.

And

Matt Brooks: that’s just

Coach Naz: on

Matt Brooks: Friday.

Coach Naz: That’s just so if you still have anything left in the tank on Saturday, the pancake breakfast at, community building at the Homer Fire Department, children’s events all day at the elementary school. It was nice that Mr. Dolson s class has. Decided to run the children’s events.

Ice sculptures will still be around, live ice carving near the Homer Fire Station. And the big thing is the parade on Main Street. Everyone’s encouraged to put on your goofiest costume if you have one of those inflatable dinosaurs or even a, even a Santa costume, I think that starts at 11 o’clock. And you can double check all this stuff on the website, Homer winter fest.org.

And we aren’t even close to done with Saturday yet. The Chili Cookoff, the Homer Trojan’s hard ice cream flavor and name, an adult event of snowman and sundaes. [00:02:00] Wing and beer tasting. So the Wing, oh, that sounds good. That that’s, I’ve, I’ve been conned into being part of the wing eating event and, chief Pitman always beats me.

So the Wing Fest and beer tasting is at the Elks. I’m sorry, I forgot to finish that off. And at the American Legion, you have wine, spirits, and cheese tasting not done yet. From one to four o’clock. This is something that’s near and dear to my heart. There’s gonna be free youth bowling, and my bowlers from the varsity team are gonna be instructing some of the kids.

So that’s a nice opportunity to meet some of the varsity players and to, have the kids learn a little.

Matt Brooks: I used to bowl when I was a kid, and it’s the one sport that I’m a sore loser at, even though I’m no good at it.

Coach Naz: The, the, the funny part about bowling is the pins don’t change, the ball doesn’t change, the distance doesn’t change, but it’s still frustrating.

It’ll get under you. For the adults again, and I don’t even know if it’s for the adults. So the Winter Clam Fest is at the Homer Elks, and that’s from four to 6:00 PM and from six to nine at the Homer Elks is once again, DJ [00:03:00] Philly c. He’s gonna be busy this weekend. At the Center for the Arts this year, the Center for the Arts is gonna be holding events on not only the 24th, but on the 31st for this year’s event.

Matt Brooks: Oh, cool.

Coach Naz: So on the 24th, they have g Love and Special Sauce, a band from Philadelphia, which I’m gonna try to talk tie in to. Let me sneak in the back door. So that’s, that’s Saturday’s finally done there. And there’s still one more day. Oh, that’s still one more day. I, I think if you make it to Sunday on this event, you’re a true community member.

Ice sculptures, looking at the long range forecast, they should be around for a while. The breakfast buffet at the American Legion from eight to 11. Kids Snowman, bingo. And. The following weekend, as I said, it’s 6 0 7 comedy out of, New York City. That’s an event that, that’s how I got on the committee.

’cause we do that event through the, the HTA, the Homer Teachers Association 6 0 7 Comedy is a troop run by Erica Serra. Oh. She’s a nationally known comic and she brings some people up. And we [00:04:00] have a good laugh. It is an adult show and it raises funds for our scholarships at the end of the year. Oh, that’s really cool.

So that’s a, that’s a very cool event. It’s, I am, I’m glad to be part of this group. I think I have said it before. I’m the guy who’s gonna get the a on the project, even though everyone else did all the work. So, which has happened before in my life.

Matt Brooks: But no, it’s, there’s so much going on. It’s great. It’s happening right here in the village of Homer Now.

Not to reiterate the whole list, but Coach, if we had to pick one or two things that you’re looking forward to beyond the, the, the bowling, what, what would be your favorite part of Winterfest?

Coach Naz: I, I love going over to the Elks. They do such a great, such a great long day over there and it’s, so many of the community members end up over there.

As I said, I was part of the wing eating contest and I, I lost horribly, which I don’t know if is that’s good or bad. The fireworks are great, just to be downtown with them. Going off the one year the comics were here and we were going out to dinner as the fireworks were going off and they’re out in New York City and they thought it was just a such a [00:05:00] great small town feel.

And it is.

Matt Brooks: And that it’s just something you can’t get anywhere else. It’s, it’s a, it’s a very homer festival now. We are pretty, I’m pretty much outta time, but. There’s a lot of stuff to go through, a whole schedule coach. If people, need to take a look at that schedule, find out more information about Homer Winter Fest, where do they go?

Coach Naz: Homer winter fest.org is a wonderful location to go. You can also check the different venues. I’m sure you can get information at the Elks. You can get information at the Legion. And I know that the Center for the Arts has a great website with all this stuff on

Matt Brooks: it. Well, I gotta thank you, coach. I know there’s a lot to get through in such a short time, but.

Looking forward to Homer Winterfest again. That is the 23rd through the 25th in a week, Friday through Sunday, right here in the village of Homer. Thank you, coach. Thank you very much. It’s been another edition of Meet Cortland County here on X 1 0 1.
