Due to the approaching winter storm, Village of Homer Mayor Hal McCabe has issued a State of Emergency.

Parking on Village of Homer Streets and in Village of Homer Municipal Lots is prohibited during this time.

Towing will occur when necessary. All unnecessary travel is prohibited.

Homer Police have also issued an advisory to residents regarding parking and travelling tips.

Radar currently shows the brunt of the storm arriving sometime early this afternoon (January 19), likely continuing through the night and into early tomorrow morning.

Snow rates will max out at up to 3″ per hour over night.

The Homer Department of Public Works (DPW) will be doing their best to keep the roads clean.

Please help them by keeping vehicles off the street during the storm.  No parking between  2-6 a.m. will strictly be enforced.

State and Local Police agencies are advising motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel.

If you must travel, leave with extra time for a slow and careful trip so you can make it to your destination safely. Clean all snow and ice from the entire vehicle before travelling and ensure the windshield is clear of frost.

Remember with the snow and wind, visibility can be poor and roads can be slippery.

Homer Police Chief Bob Pitman offered the following tips to keep in mind:

-Get the latest weather forecast and road conditions before leaving.
-Always clean your windows and mirrors fully of any snow and ice before driving.
-Keep a full tank of gas
-Make sure fluid levels are topped off (windshield washer fluid, anti-freeze)
-Use headlights at all times to increase your visibility to others.
-Remember, if your windshield wipers are in use due to weather, then your headlights must be on.
-Drive safely, decrease your speed accordingly.
-Do NOT use cruise control. This decreases your reaction time to apply braking.

Thanks and please be safe.
