Homer Police Chief & Sergeant Join Thousands in Nation’s Capital For National Police Week – Honor Those Who Have Fallen

The Village of Homer Police Department says Police Chief Pitman and Sergeant Soderholm last week visited Washington DC to commemorate National Police Week and to honor those in law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year. Homer Police joined thousands of law enforcement agencies in the nation’s capital.

“Engravers began over a month ago to ensure the 345 names of fallen officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The names of officers from the Central New York area were added to the memorial, Lt Hoosock, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office; Officer Jensen, Syracuse Police Department; Deputy Campbell, Oswego County Sheriff’s Office; Trooper Bilodeau, New York State Police.” Homer Police said in a release.

Last Tuesday was the 37th annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Mall, the names of the fallen law enforcement officers were then read aloud. The following day, Wednesday was the 31st Memorial March and Service to the Law Enforcement Memorial. Homer Police says this procession included the playing of bag pipes, Emerald Societies, honor guards, antique police cars, and motorcycles from the United States and Canada.

Both Chief Pitman and Sergeant Soderholm were also able to meet honorary Special Agent DJ Daniel. DJ has a dream to become a police officer and was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer in 2018, but has beaten the odds. He received US Secret Service credentials back on March 4th during President Trump’s joint address to Congress.
