Homer Mayor Provides Update on Salt Shortage
Village of Homer Mayor, Pat Clune, provided an update regarding the salt shortage affecting numerous municipalities throughout the state, including the Village of Homer, during Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting.
Mayor Clune expressed his thanks to the Town of Cuyler, who provided salt to the Village of Homer, but also to all the municipalities in Cortland County. Clune says all municipalities have been working together to deal with the salt shortage.
“I will say for our village residents, be careful on the ice. As everything is melting and freezing and [the village] is not able to be as gratuitous with our salting as we have in the past.”
Mayor Clune said during the meeting.
Residents are being asked to slow down and use caution around intersections within the village, and in parking lots throughout. Mayor Clune said the Village of Homer has already gone through their supply for salt for the season and are working with other departments to ensure a supply is available for the remainder of winter.
The village, along with other municipalities, have been using a mix of salt and sand on roadways. Clune expressed caution that sand does provide grip, but during thaws and refreezes it may not be as effective.
