New York State Police from Homer arrested Robert Benson, 42, of Homer, for the misdemeanors of Petit Larceny and Resisting Arrest.

This arrest occurred Monday afternoon at about 4:10 after a trooper responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Wal-Mart on Bennie Road in Cortlandville.

An investigation determined that Benson had stolen about $71 in batteries when he ran out the back of the store.

The trooper checked the surrounding stores and was flagged down by a resident of the Waldon Oaks Assisted Living Center, which is near Wal-Mart, and advised that an unknown man had just walked inside.

When approached by the trooper Benson ran out an emergency exit.

The trooper followed and arrested Benson just outside.

Benson was arraigned in the Town of Cortlandville Court and sent to the Cortland County Jail in lieu of $750 cash bail or $1,500 property bond.

His next court date in the Town of Cortlandville is on January 30, 2017.
