An 82-year-old Homer man was pronounced dead yesterday (February 4) evening, after he fell through the ice on Skaneateles Lake.
Emergency crews from both Cayuga and Onondaga County responded to the scene just before 4:00 p.m., where they say Alfred Coon was ice fishing about 150 yards offshore when he fell through and didn’t resurface for several minutes.
The incident occurred off the south west end of the lake, near North Glen Haven Road in Cayuga County.
Residents on the lake heard Coon’s cries for help and responding crews had to maneuver in boats to get to him.
They performed immediate life-saving measures as soon as they got him out, but it was too late. Coon was pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the water.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Authorities are reminding everyone about the dangers of being out on ice after rapidly warming temperatures, even if it was safe to be on in the days prior.
