Homer Fire Department elected new officers on Friday (April 9) night for 2021-2022.
Stepping in as chief: Steven Hayes, joined by deputy chief Nick Card and assistant chiefs Jay & Joe Riley.
Making up the executive board: Tim Maxson at president; Kathy Keegan, vice president; secretary Dick Elmer and treasurer Randy McKay.
The group takes office later this month following an installation ceremony planned for April 23.
Retiring chief Mahlon Irish Jr. wished them all luck in their new roles.
He has been with the department since April 1974 and retired as chief once before in 2014. That wouldn’t last, as he was re-elected chief in 2017.
Irish has been in remission from prostate cancer for over three years, which motivated his extensive efforts to improve carcinogenic exposure levels among local fire crews while in office.
This took the form of various trainings and workshops, along with equipment upgrades to increase protections from cancer-causing materials found at the scene of fires.
Additionally, he served as chairman of the village planning board until his resignation in October 2020.
The planning board is now chaired by Don Ferris and is scheduled to meet tonight via Zoom at 6:30 pm.
