Homer & Cortland Fire Departments Respond to Smoke Condition at Homer Elementary – Cause Linked to Dryer

Just after 10:30 Wednesday morning, Homer Fire was dispatched to Homer Elementary School for an automatic fire alarm.

Arriving on scene, Homer Fire learned of a smoke condition inside the dryer room at the school. The building was safely evacuated prior to arrival. Due to an active smoke condition and as a precaution, mutual aid of another fire engine from Cortland Fire was requested. Homer also responded with their ladder truck. A member of the Preble Fire Department passing through the area also responded for assistance.

Homer Firefighters confirmed a smoke condition in the dryer room with smoke coming from a dryer located in the room. Homer Chief Riley told X101 News the dryer was safely removed from the building by school maintenance. Firefighters then began to ventilate the building. The cause of the smoke condition is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

Cortland Fire cleared around 10:50 with Homer Fire clearing just after 11am after the building was safely reoccupied once the all clear was given.
