Homer Board of Trustees Discuss NYSDOT Plans at Two Intersections on Route 281
Village of Homer Mayor Pat Clune provided details regarding a recent meeting the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and all department heads within the Village of Homer had earlier this month on February 4 regarding their plans intersection safety improvements at Routes 281/90 and Routes 281/41.
Clune noted there have been “rumblings” for a while on what the NYSDOT is planning to do at the two busy intersections within the village from roundabouts to the addition of left turn lanes. He added the NYSDOT provided the village with two draft renderings of one consisting of roundabouts and another of left turn lanes for both intersections. Clune stressed both renderings are drafts and nothing is finalized as of yet. Both drafts are available at the village offices.
A public hearing is planned by the NYSDOT sometime this August for the proposed project at both intersections. The design and approvals are expected to be in January 2027 with the project going out to bid in February 2028 and construction beginning in Spring of 2028.
X101 News asked Mayor Clune if the NYSDOT advocated either roundabouts or turn lanes during their meeting. Clune said one of the representatives was “very much” for the roundabouts, who cited another municipality that chose one intersection for a roundabout and another for turn lanes with the municipality later wishing they did both roundabouts.
In addition to the two intersection improvements, Mayor Clune added the NYSDOT also plans to conduct crosswalk improvements between the two major intersections on Route 281, including crosswalk signals.
The project is being funded by the NYSDOT with the village not providing any financial contribution. The NYSDOT will have final say on what the project will be.
