During the Village of Homer Board of Trustees meeting last night at the Homer Town Hall, the board voted unanimously to approve applying for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $600,000 dollars.

The Trustees also approved reserving a match of 5% of the grant dollars in the amount of $30,000 from the fire truck reserves.

The Homer Fire Department looks to replace one of their aging trucks, Rescue Truck 541. Homer Fire Chief Jay Riley says the truck was purchased back in 1992. Currently, the fire department looks to replace the truck with a new Rescue/Pumper. The addition of another pumper truck would also improve the ISO rating the fire department has. Homer Fire recently saw an improvement on their ISO rating earlier this month.

Estimated cost for a new truck is in the neighborhood of $900,000 dollars. A committee is already underway at the Fire Department to look into the purchase of the future 541. The truck would not enter service at the Homer Fire Department for a few years though.

Planning ahead though, has its benefits. Village of Homer Treasurer Tanya Digenarro said during the meeting that even though the cost for the truck is expected to be around $900,000, there will be enough money in the reserves to pay for the truck.
