High Wind Warning And Winter Weather Advisory Issued For Cortland County by NWS


Both a High Wind Warning and Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton for Cortland County.

The High Wind Warning goes into effect at 2pm today thru 7am on Thursday. The NWS says west winds will be between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Impacts could include downed power lines, tree limbs.

“South to southwest winds will develop ahead of a cold front this afternoon, with gusts 35 to 45 mph. The front may be accompanied by sudden stronger wind gusts and possible thunderstorms, with winds shifting to the west in its wake. Winds will be strongest behind the front, gusting 50 to 60 mph at times, especially overnight, as much colder air also quickly moves into the area.”

NWS said in a release.

The Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect at 10 o’clock this evening and remain in effect until 7pm Thursday evening. Snow accumulations are expected to be between 4 and 6 inches. The NWS says with the gusty winds, near-blizzard conditions are possible at times due to wind gusts of up to 30 mph.

Northern Cortland County is expected to be significantly impacted by heavy snow bands.
