Hearts Act Supported by Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin Has Passed Senate – Will Bring AEDs to Schools

US Senator Chuck Schumer has announced the US Senate has passed the HEARTS Act, which will bring lifesaving AEDs to schools throughout the country. The bill was supported by Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin, who had an AED device save his life. The bill now requires a signature from President Biden to become law.

“Touchdown! I’m proud to announce, after months of working with Damar Hamlin and the Buffalo Bills, the Senate has just passed the lifesaving HEARTS Act to put more AEDs in schools across America – like the one that saved Damar’s life,”

said Senator Schumer.

The bill was passed through the US Senate by both Democrats and Republicans; it has already passed through the House of Representatives. In a release by Senator Schumer, the bill will create a grant program at the US Department of Health and Human Services to support CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training. The bill will also assist school districts purchase AEDs and create a cardiac emergency response plan.

“When Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during an NFL game in January 2023, the Bills medical team used an AED and performed CPR, saving Hamlin’s life. Since then Hamlin has used his miraculous and inspirational recovery story to help kids across the country, working with Schumer to create a new federal program that will help put more AEDs in schools.”

Senator Schumer’s Office said in a release.

Schools that have AEDs and have a child who experiences a cardiac arrest are seven times more likely to survive than children in schools without an AED.
