Matt Brooks: [00:00:00] Good morning. I’m Matt Brooks on X101, Always Classic, in for another edition of Happening in Homer. And joining me in the studio, well, it’s Andrew Pierce, Recreation Director for the Village of Homer. Thank you for joining me this morning, Andrew.
Andrew Pierce: Always a pleasure. Glad to be here.
Matt Brooks: Well, it’s been an exciting summer so far, and well, one of the annual series has already begun with the Village of Homer summer concert series. The Cortland Old Timers Band performed yesterday. Can you tell me, uh, what can people expect from the concert series this summer?
Andrew Pierce: Well, a concert series, like you said, started last night and we’re going all the way through August 27th.
We’ve got some jazz, some uh, rock. All different types of music. Um, we’re looking forward to a diversified, uh, event and a lot of people showing up.
Matt Brooks: And correct me if I’m wrong, but if the weather, ’cause the, I mean if it’s on the Village Green, it’ll be, uh, nice weather, but the weather’s a bit more inclement, it goes to the center, correct?
Andrew Pierce: Yeah, we bring it into the Center for the Arts and, uh, we’ll get everybody notified either here on the radio or through our Facebook [00:01:00] page.
Matt Brooks: And it’s all free to attend. So it’s a great thing to do on Wednesday nights. Now, in addition to music, another thing going on in the village, starting on July 10th with Sonic 3 is Movies on the Green.
Now, this was one of your ideas because this is the second year. It’s, it’s, uh, returning to the the village. Can you tell me about it?
Andrew Pierce: Movies on the Green is exactly what it sounds like. We inflate a 21 foot mobile screen, uh, great sound system. We pop popcorn for everyone and we’ve got a series of movies July 10th on Thursday nights through August 21st.
Matt Brooks: And those come out, uh, start right when it starts hitting dusk. Correct? So you get to see the movie?
Andrew Pierce: Yeah. As soon as the sun goes down, we try to get it, uh, started as soon as possible, um, but we keep everybody busy with some music. It’s a popcorn before the event, so, uh, get there early, get your blankets and chairs ready.
Matt Brooks: It’s a whole lot of family fun. And, and we are running a little bit out of time, but I wanna make sure we got the, the music, we got the movies, what else is going on in the village as we head into the summer?
Andrew Pierce: Oh, we’re getting ready to kick off our [00:02:00] second season of, uh, outdoor basketball. Right there on the courts, behind the fire department in the rec office. We’ve got 28 teams playing this year.
Matt Brooks: Wow.
Andrew Pierce: Um, so Wednesday nights and Thursday nights, beginning July 2nd and 3rd, all the way through August 21st. There’s some great basketball out there being played.
Matt Brooks: Uh, that’s a lot. 28 teams.
Andrew Pierce: 28 teams from all over the county and adjoining counties.
It’s a, it’s a great atmosphere and a great event for everybody to come out and, uh. Be part of the community.
Matt Brooks: So, uh, one last thing before we head out. Whether people wanna know more about the movies, the music, the basketball, or any of the other programs going on in the village this summer, Andrew, where should people go?
Andrew Pierce: Always check out our Homer Recreation Facebook page. I update it daily with, uh, upcoming events or things to be registering for. Or you can visit us on VillageOfHomer.RecDesk.com.
Matt Brooks: Perfect. Well, thank you for joining me again on for another edition of Happening in Homer Andrew.
Andrew Pierce: Always a pleasure. We’re looking forward to a great summer.
Matt Brooks: I as well. And it’s been another edition of Happening in Homer here on X101, Always Classic. I’m Matt Brooks.
