Tompkins Cortland Community College President Carl Haynes provided a sobering report to the Tompkins County Legislature, as he delivered his final “State of the College” message Tuesday night.

Haynes plans to retire in August.

Haynes assured legislators that the College is aware of and responding to some “brutal facts” including declining State and limited County support and an enrollment decline.

Haynes says what is driving the enrollment decline are restrictions on financial aid, increased competition from four-year State schools, the effects of an improving economy, and media coverage questioning the value of higher education.
