A Virgil man will spend at least 20 years in connection with the brutal slaying of Cortland teen last May.
24-year-old Michael Hammond was sentenced Thursday to the near-maximum prison term in connection with the stabbing and beating death of 16-year-old Amie Leland of Cortland.
Cortland Police found Leland in her parents Lincoln Ave. home last May after responding there a for a reported medical emergency. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hammond told police he and Leland had been dating without her parents knowledge. She broke up with him and on the day of the stabbing. He was trying to reconcile their relationship. Hammond told police he snapped and killed the girl.
Last month, Hammond plead guilty to a felony count of second-degree murder in exchange for the 20 year to life sentence.
