Half of NY adults completely vaccinated; Beaches OK’d to reopen with social distance

Governor Cuomo has announced that beaches and pools can operate with six-foot social distancing in anticipation of Memorial Day next weekend. New York State’s goal is for all parks to reopen at 100 percent capacity by July 4.

Yesterday, the statewide positivity rate fell to 1.10%, the lowest Since October 17. The 7-Day average positivity rate is now 1.28%, marking 37 straight days of decline.

Cortland County’s 7-day rate is 1.9%. Currently, there are 59 active cases and one person is in the hospital.

According to the NYS vaccine tracker, half of adult New Yorkers 18 and older have completed their vaccination series.

Meanwhile, adolescents 12-15 years old are now eligible for a Pfizer shot. It’s the only brand currently approved for this age group.

This will likely grow a partnership between Kinney Drugs and local school districts already serving the 16 to 17 year-old population.

Students at all SUNY and CUNY schools are mandated to get vaccinated before they can leave for summer break, and prior to arrival for the Fall 2021 semester.


Appointments are available for a single-dose Johnson & Johnson clinic at the SUNY Cortland ice arena on Wednesday (May 19) from 4-6 pm.
