Guthrie Joins in Raising Awareness on Organ, Tissue and Cornea Donation During Donate Life Month

Guthrie says over 100,000 throughout the nation are currently waiting for an organ transplant with at least 17 people dying daily without receiving the transplant they needed. Guthrie also says a person is added to a transplant waiting list every 10 minutes.

With this, the organization says it has joined the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) to raise awareness on organ, tissue and cornea donations. The mission will be to inspire all during Donate Life Month by registering to become an organ donor.

“As a health system, we view our role in organ donation as a critical component of our mission to save lives and support families during their most challenging times,” said Joseph Sawyer, President, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. “Our commitment to facilitating organ donations is a testament to our dedication to health care excellence and community service. The greater number of individuals we can motivate to become organ donors, the more profoundly we fulfill our mission as advocates for the well-being of our entire community.”

Someone who registers as an organ donor can save up to 8 lives and help over 75 people, Guthrie says. Anyone may become an organ donor, regardless of age or medical history.

Currently, the organ in greatest demand is a kidney, with over 90,000 on a waiting list, other organs following for demand are liver, heart and lungs. You can learn more about becoming an organ donor by visiting Core.org and sign up by visiting RegisterMe.org.
