Guthrie Cortland Medical Center Designated as Primary Stroke Center

Guthrie has announced the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center has now been officially designated as a primary stroke center by The Joint Commission. The announcement comes as the month of May is Stroke Awareness Month. Guthrie says the designation signifies Guthrie Cortland Medical Center meets rigorous national standards for the rapid and effective treatment of stroke patients and is now part of a vital network dedicated to improving stroke outcomes across the region.

“This achievement means our community members now have access to nationally recognized stroke care, right here at home,” said Megan Vianos, Stroke Program Manager at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center. “Every second counts when someone is having a stroke, and this certification confirms that we are equipped and prepared to deliver lifesaving treatment quickly and effectively.”

To be recognized as a primary stroke center, a hospital must provide a high level of care for patients who are showing symptoms of a stroke, which Guthrie Cortland Medical Center does. That care includes: rapid diagnostic imaging, 24/7 access to neurologists (on-site or via telemedicine), and evidence-based treatment protocols, such as the timely administration of clot-busting medications (tPA) or transfer arrangements for advanced interventions when needed.

“The efforts of our caregivers have been nothing short of amazing. Achieving this designation has taken months of extensive training,” said Jennifer Yartym, Guthrie Cortland Medical Center President. “Throughout the process, the goal has been clear for our caregivers: Deliver on our promise to offer high-quality care to the community we call home.”

The Joint Commission is a nonprofit organization who accredits over 22,000 US Health care organizations and programs with the highest standards for healthcare quality and patient safety.
