Groton Man Found Guilty of Attempted Sex Abuse at Trial

Local News

A Groton man faces up to 4 years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a girl at a trial this week in Tompkins County Court.

67-year-old Howard Leonard was found guilty Thursday of first-degree attempted sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. The jury deadlocked on a first-degree sexual abuse charge.

Leonard was accused of having inappropriate contact with the teen on two separate occasions earlier this year.

Leonard was represented by Cortland attorney Richard VanDonsel. VanDonsel also serves as the Cortland City Corporation Counsel. Former Cortland County Assistant DA Wendy Franklin, who now works in Tompkins County, prosecuted the case.

Leonard was held on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. He’s due for sentencing January 8th.
