Governor Hochul Announces Enhanced WIC Benefits at Farmers Markets

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced New Yorkers who utilize the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will receive double the benefits if they are spending at participating farmers’ markets.

This comes as part of a partnership between the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) and the Department of Health (DOH). Usually, the program allots $25 in Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons for WIC-eligible participants. This year, however, that amount has been increased to $50. Coupon books are available at participating WIC clinics on a first come, first served basis.

“Governor Hochul’s commitment to ensuring all New Yorkers have access to nutritious food is one of the many ways the State is working to overcome disparities that impact social determinants of health, including food security,” said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “This program is an excellent way for participants in the WIC program to supplement their food budget and provide healthy, nutrient-rich meals and snacks for their families.”

The FMNP aims to provide a boost to New York farmers while expanding access to food and helping families meet their nutritional goals across the state. For more information regarding the program, visit agriculture.ny.gov/farmersmarkets.
