Governor Hochul Announces Direct Financial Assistance to Low and Moderate Families – Checks to be Given by End of August

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday morning that the state will be issuing checks to low and moderate families just in time for back to school shopping. The Governor says families will not be required to submit paperwork or any information to the state to receive the check. Parents/Guardians can see a payment of up to $330 per child. In total, $350 million dollars will be distributed.

Over 1 million New Yorkers in the state will receive some form of financial assistance through the Empire State Child Credit program. The credit now applies to children now at birth. Originally the tax credit began when a child reached four years of age.

“We’re putting money back in the pockets of more than a million New Yorkers because this administration delivers for working families,” Governor Hochul said. “Our work is far from over. From expanding tax credits to increasing access to child care assistance, I’ll never stop fighting to address the cost of living for working parents and help them create a brighter future for their kids.”

The Empire State Child Credit is a refundable tax credit to residents in the state who are income eligible. 2023 tax filings by residents show over a million families have taken advantage of the Empire State Child Credit to receive hundreds of millions in tax credits based on their 2023 filing. Taxpayers who received at least $100 through the credit will receive a check.
