Governor Continues Push to Plant 25 Million Trees by 2033, Clean Energy Transition, and Safeguard Clean Water

Plans to increase the changeover to clean energy to power the state, plant 25 million trees and invest $500 million dollars in safeguarding clean water for all have been included in the FY 2025 State Budget that was passed over the weekend. The overall State Budget is a record $237 billion dollars.

“New York is building a clean economy and protecting our environment for future generations,” Governor Hochul said. “New Yorkers have experienced first-hand the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and this Budget prioritizes accelerating our clean energy future to drive down emissions, building communities that can withstand extreme storms, and investing in clean water.”

The Governor said in order for the state to achieve its clean energy goals, this year’s state budget includes the Renewable Action through Project Interconnection and Deployment (RAPID) Act. The law will create a “one stop shop” for the environmental review and permitting of electric transmission and improve the interconnection process. The Governor’s Office says the permitting process will now go into a clear statutory framework which will balance transparency and environmental protection with also fast decision making.

The mission to plant 25 million trees by 2033 received a major funding boost from this year’s budget. Originally announced by Governor Hochul during her State of the State back in January, this year’s budget includes $15 million to fund annual grants to local municipalities to plant trees and support reforestation and urban forests.

Clean water funding will total $500 million dollars this year, with total clean water infrastructure investment now at $5.5 billion dollars between 2017 and 2024, the Governor’s Office noted. Additional funding through the state budget includes: $40 million to create a Resilient & Ready Program on future storms, and $15 million in equipping local municipalities with tools and resources in preventing/preparing for floods and keeping power during storms.
