Gov. Hochul announced that New York State was awarded a 7-year, $28 million GEAR UP competitive grant from the Department of Education.

The money will help increase college and career readiness for more than 6,200 low-income students in the Empire State who attend high-poverty middle and high schools. Eligible students beginning in 7th grade through their freshman year in college will have access to this support, including tutoring and homework assistance, academic counseling and financial literacy. GEAR UP also provides services to parents and guardians as well as professional development for teachers, counselors and administrators.

This is the fourth consecutive GEAR UP award New York State has received, and is one of only two GEAR UP states funded this year by the Department of Education.
