Gov. Cuomo was in Ithaca yesterday (October 16) and announced that construction has begun on the $24.7 million expansion of the airport.
“Ithaca Tompkins International Airport; you fly from anywhere to here,” Cuomo said alongside local officials early yesterday afternoon. “Ithaca is going to be taking off and that all starts now.”
The project will expand the terminal by nearly 50 percent, including the addition of a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection building, which will allow international flights to fly directly into Ithaca instead of stopping at a different airport to clear U.S. Customs.
The larger terminal will also provide more seating, six new gates, new retail opportunities and three additional passenger bridges.
There will also be new passenger amenities available, such as more modern and spacious waiting areas, charging stations and post-security food and beverage options.
Work is set to be complete in late 2019.
