US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and US Representative Rosa DeLauro have introduced updated legislation to create a permanent, national paid family and medical leave program.
The Family and Medical Insurance Leave, or FAMILY Act would make sure every worker has access to paid leave for every serious medical event whenever it’s needed. This would apply to workers no matter the size of their employer or if they’re self-employed or part-time.
Improvements in this year’s bill introduction include expanding benefit eligibility to truly cover all workers, a progressive wage replacement rate for benefits, and no unpaid waiting period to receive benefits.
