Gift Card Scams Are on The Rise Says Cortland Police

The City of Cortland Police Department says there has been an increase in scams involving phone calls by scammers attempting to collect debt, fines, or receive bail payments. The scammers are also posing as those of authority including the IRS, Social Security, or Law Enforcement.

The scammers request that the victim submit payments by having them go to a store, purchase gift cards, and then supply the gift card codes on the back of the card. Cortland Police say the elderly are the demographic that is the main target and who fall victim to the scams.

Anyone who has been contacted by a scammer like this is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.
