Gas Prices Rise After Conflict in Middle East Says AAA
Gas prices have risen in New York State by 10 cents in the past week; nationally, prices have risen 8 cents, AAA says. Prices are moving up due to escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which has been “rattling” the oil market, AAA added. The New York States average is now at $3.21 a gallon; the national average is $3.22 a gallon.
In Cortland County, the average price for a gallon of gas on Monday was $3.22. Neighboring Tompkins County had a lower average price at $3.14 a gallon. AAA says the rising price of oil, conflict in the middle east, and access to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for oil vessels, have caused oil prices to rise. The Strait of Hormuz has 20% of global oil trade pass through it and the risk of its closure could send prices even higher.
Gas prices were not the only fuel price to see a rise. Diesel prices have also increased significantly. Prices have risen by 16 cents per gallon nationally. New York has seen an average price increase of 7 cents per gallon of diesel.
