Gas Prices Remain Mostly Unchanged – Some Areas See Slight Decrease

Gas prices through the Memorial Day weekend went relatively unchanged, says AAA. The national average for a gallon of gas stands at $3.59, just a penny more than the average this time last year. In New York, the average price fell by 3 cents since last week to $3.67 a gallon. A year ago the state average was $3.71 a gallon.

AAA says over 38 million motorists traveled over 50 miles during the unofficial start to the summer season. Gas prices are expected to continue a decline with the help of low oil prices. The Biden administration has also announced the release of 1 million barrels of gas from the Northeast Gas Supply Reserve in anticipation of the July Fourth holiday.

In Cortland County, the county average stands at $3.69 a gallon. For Tompkins County, the average is the exact same, at $3.69 a gallon. Neighboring counties Cayuga and Onondaga have lower average gas prices at $3.57 and $3.64 respectively.
