Some could say it is an early Christmas gift, or that this is how it is supposed to be. Gas prices statewide are down nearly 42 cents, when compared to just a month ago. The average price for a gallon of gas in the state is now $3.44, when compared to $3.83 a month ago.

Prices are expected to continue to decline through the New Year, according to AAA. The national average currently stands much lower than the New York State average, with the national average at $3.14 a gallon.

“The cost of oil, gasoline’s main ingredient, has been hovering in the low-to-mid $70s per barrel, and that’s $50 less than the peak last Spring,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “Combined with low seasonal demand, gas prices could slide a bit more before leveling off.”
