Gas Odor Leads to Late Night Check in at Cortland Gas Substation
This past Monday night at 9:47, Virgil Firefighters were sent to investigate a sulfur smell that originated in the area of a gas substation on South Cortland Virgil Road. Upon arrival only a few minutes later, Virgil Fire conducted air monitoring, thermal imaging, and visual surveillance to find no elevated levels. Technical support was provided by the Cortland Fire Department Hazmat Team.
The gas provider was notified and they were able verify that there was no active leak of natural gas, and that the smell may have been caused by a problem with the odorant inducing system. The scene was turned over to a gas company at 11:07pm. Upon follow up service work yesterday morning, it was concluded that there wasn’t an active gas leak.
It is critical that if you ever smell gas odor from what could be a possible leak, do not turn anything on or off. Evacuate the area, and then call 911. Gas smells should not be emanating under normal operation.
