Local farmers have a chance to tap into some state assistance to help them make their tractors safer.
Statistics show a farmer’s risk of dying on the job is eight times greater than that of the average American worker. Among the risk factors for farmers are tractor rollovers.
Many tractors built before 1985 are not equipped with a roll bar. Rollbars can be installed, but they cost thousands of dollars.
The New York Rollover Protection System Rebate Program (ROPS) reimburses 70 percent of the cost of purchasing and installing a roll bar on a tractor.
This year’s state budget did not include funding for the program, but State Senator James Seward pushed for the money. $250,000 is available to assist farmers to install roll bars.
