Around 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the Homer Fire Department was dispatched to Route 11 in the area of Homer Iron Works for a reported strong odor of fuel.

As emergency crews arrived, they found kerosene on the roadway just north of the Village of Homer at the caller’s location. Homer Fire closed Route 11 to one lane of traffic away from the spill and efforts began to contain the spill.

Assisting the Homer Fire Department in containment of the spill was the City of Cortland Fire Department for further hazardous materials resources and personnel. The Town of Homer Highway Department, NYS Department of Transportation and the NY Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Team also assisted.

Route 11 was eventually reopened around 6pm Tuesday evening. The cause of the spillage remains under investigation.
