Freezing Temperatures Can Lead to Frozen Pipes – Tips to Prevent Issue

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. With the below freezing, can come a headache no one wants to deal with, frozen pipes.

When pipes begin to freeze over, the expansion of the water freezing will put a tremendous pressure on the pipe, whether it is metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of the pipe, expanding water will cause the pipe to break, potentially leaving you with a hefty cleanup bill.

The American Red Cross says there are ways to protect pipes from freezing and potentially bursting. Those tips include: keeping garage doors closed if water supply lines are located within the garage, let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes, keeping the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and the night, and if you’re going away make sure to keep your house temperature at a minimum 55 degrees.
