Former New York State Senator Jim Seward Passes Away – Flags in County Lowered to Half-Mast
Former New York State Senator Jim Seward has died at the age of 72. Seward has been battling bladder cancer since 2019, which led to him not seeking reelection in 2020 and retiring from the State Senate. Seward began his career in state politics all the way back in 1986 when he was elected as State Senator for the 50th district in New York; he was the State Senator for the 50th District until 2002 when redistricting moved him to the 51st Senate District.
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Jim Seward, a true icon in New York State politics. As we mourn his loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to Cindy and the entire Seward family, we also pause to celebrate a life well-lived. Jim’s legacy, respected by both sides of the aisle, will be remembered with great admiration. I will forever cherish the time I spent with Jim, his invaluable counsel, insightful perspectives, and profound wisdom.” Said New York State Senator Peter Oberacker.
Senator Seward was an advocate for education, securing state aid for local districts to offset rising taxes and to support technology and special education initiatives within his schools. He strongly supported enactment of the STAR school tax relief program and has championed property tax relief.
“We all lost a great man this week. Jim worked tirelessly for Cortland County and all of NYS. We are all better off because Jim was here.” The Cortland County Republican Committee said in a social media post.
For Cortland and Tompkins County, Jim Seward brought in millions of dollars for local municipalities, local businesses, and organizations. In a release by Cortland County, flags will be lowered to half-mast for 30 days to honor Seward’s legacy and his invaluable service to the Cortland Community and New York State.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Senator Seward’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We share in their grief and join them in celebrating the life of a remarkable individual who touched so many lives through his work and kindness.” Cortland County said in a release.
Funeral arrangements are still being put in place and will be announced at a later time.
