Former Cortland County legislator and DSS Commissioner Mary Ann Discenza passed away this weekend, after a lengthy health battle that led her to resign from the legislature in January 2019.
She was 78 years-old.
In addition to her county service, Discenza also spent nearly a decade (2003-2011) as a state coordinator with the federally-granted Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities program, or IDEA, offering early intervention services for affected families.
As a legislator, she represented District 6 in the city of Cortland and served as minority leader of the Democratic caucus.
“Mary Ann’s career and life were dedicated to serving the public, working tirelessly to help ensure that no one fell through the cracks and maximizing the benefits provided by county services,” said Cortland County Democratic chairman Tim Perfetti. “She will be missed and she will be long remembered by our committee and the Cortland community.”
Discenza graduated from St. Mary’s and Cortland High School, then later earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work at The Catholic University of America.
