Former Homer Fire Chief Mahlon Irish Jr. has been named the recipient of this year’s National Volunteer Fire Council’s Chief James P. Seavey Sr. Health and Wellness Leadership Award. The award is also co-sponsored by VFIS and Ward Diesel Filter Systems.

The award is given to a member of a volunteer fire department who served as a leader within the department in creating or promoting emergency responder health and wellness programs or initiatives in areas such as firefighter cancer, heart health, behavioral health, and the overall health and wellness of firefighters.

Mahlon, who is a cancer survivor, developed and has presented a Firefighter Cancer Awareness program. He has presented his awareness program to firefighters throughout the state and country.

A special celebration will be held in May of this year where Mahlon will be recognized. The celebration will be held in conjunction with the National Volunteer Fire Council’s spring board meeting.
