Former Cortland Sprinter Melique Garcia Competes at World Athletics Championships

Former Cortland standout sprinter Melique Garcia ’15 competed in the 100-meter dash as a representative of Honduras at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon on July 15.

Garcia advanced past the preliminary round with a time of 10.70 seconds before being eliminated in the next round after he finished in 10.88 seconds. Garcia, a native of Watervliet, N.Y., was one of 71 competitors in the event.

At Cortland, Garcia competed for three seasons from 2012-15. He was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American indoors in the 200-meter dash (national runner-up in 2015 and fourth place in 2014) and an All-American in the 100-meter dash in 2015 (fourth place). He also qualified twice for nationals in the 60-meter dash indoors and was a five-time outdoor national qualifier (100-meter dash in 2013, 2014 and 2015; 200-meter dash in 2014 and 2015). He was selected to the SUNYAC Men’s Track and Field All-Decade team (2010-19).
