(EXPIRED): Flood warning issued across most of Cortland County

UPDATE – 6:10 pm

FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING FOR SOUTHWESTERN CORTLAND COUNTY until 8 pm.

ANOTHER FLASH FLOOD WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR CENTRAL CORTLAND COUNTY until 8:45 pm.

At 601 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that heavy rain has fallen across the warned area.

Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up less than a half inch are expected. Flash flooding is ongoing.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include:

Cortland; Homer; Virgil; McGraw; Harford; Munsons Corners; Cortland West; Marathon; East Homer; and Freetown Corners.

Gridley Creek is especially vulnerable to flash flooding from this rain.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Southwestern Cortland County until 800 PM EDT.

At 450 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area.

Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible.

Flash flooding is ongoing or expected on small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include:

  • Cortland
  • Homer
  • Virgil
  • McGraw
  • Harford
  • Munsons Corners
  • Cortland West

Turn around. Don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
