Chairman Kevin Fitch of the Cortland County Legislature has called for a Committee of the Whole meeting, set to take place this evening at 6 PM in the Cortland County Legislative Chambers.
The gathering will allow the Legislature to discuss the ongoing asylum seeker issue in New York State. Cortland County currently has Emergency Orders in effect prohibiting county hotels, motels, owners of multi-family dwellings or owners of real estate from accepting undocumented immigrants that may seek entry into the County after the recent expiration of Title 42. The current State of Emergency is in effect through June 10th, while current Emergency Orders are expected to run through this week.
These measures are in place due to limitations of services and housing available in Cortland County. Officials say a plan must first be put in place for Cortland County to assist with this national issue.
