Fire on Stewart Place in City Ruled Accidental
Around 2:30 Saturday afternoon, Cortland Fire was dispatched to a possible structure fire at 20 Stewart Place in the City of Cortland. A neighbor of the residence called County 9-1-1 and reported seeing smoke and flames coming from an electric meter on the side of the house.
Firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes of dispatch and confirmed a light smoke condition and a small fire on the wall next to the electric meter. Cortland Fire says firefighters extinguished the fire with a dry chemical and also a CO2 fire extinguisher. A check of the inside of the home found no smoke or extension of the fire.
Residents inside the home were able to safely evacuate.
Continued investigation led to firefighters determining the fire had originated on the outside of the home. National Grid was able to disconnect the power to the house through the installed smart meter. They would later arrive on scene to assist. No damage was reported on the interior of the home.
No injuries were reported.
Cortland Fire says the fire has been ruled accidental.
