Local high school sports are now delayed until at least September 21, announced yesterday by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
Regional and state championship games have been completely cancelled for the Fall.
Student-athletes had previously been gearing up for an August 24th start to their respective seasons.
Officials say there is still a possibility they’ll have to scrap Fall competitions altogether.
In that case, a condensed schedule would be used in January 2021 that would look something like this:
The NCAA also released updated guidance yesterday for schools to be able to play college sports amid the pandemic.
Some of the requirements would include testing all athletes for the virus no more than 72 hours before playing and mandating everyone on the sideline wear a mask.
But that’s only if players will be allowed to take the court, which officials are still unsure about at this time due to the current trend of spiking cases across the country.
“If there is to be college sports in the fall, we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic,” stated NCAA President Mark Emmert.
