Extreme Heat in the Forecast For Today – Heavy Rain and Storms Likely
The New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is warning New Yorkers today will be another day with high temperatures with areas reaching temperatures between 90 and 101 degrees. The National Weather Service in Binghamton also says thunderstorms are likely this afternoon into the evening hours with heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding possible.
The NYS Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is reminding residents to be aware of the signs of heat stroke and to seek medical attention immediately if so. Signs of a heat stroke include: extremely high body temperatures, red, hot, and dry skin with no sweat, rapid/strong pulse, and dizziness, confusion, or unconsciousness.
For those who plan to be outside, wear light-colored and loose clothing and a hat. Never leave children or pets inside a vehicle at any time. The National Weather Service and Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers an online map highlighting heat related impacts. The map is color-coded; Cortland County is listed in the category level 2, which indicates a moderate risk for heat related impacts. Those can include those sensitive to heat, especially for those who do not have adequate cooling or hydration. It will also impact some health systems and industries.
